General Nerdy News

  • Atari, the bringer of games such as Asteroids, Centipede and Pong, has filed for bankruptcy protection. The American section of the company wanted to seperate from its French parent called Atari SA. Atari SA has not made a profit since 1999. The US faction hopes the move will enable it to produce ditigal games for phones and tablets.

  • Scientists have shown that if you're in a car crash, it's better to be slim than overweight. A journal published on January 21 in the Emergency Medicine Journal showed that drivers with a body mass index (BMI) from 30 to 35 are 20 per cent more likely to die in crashes. People with a BMI of higher than 40 are 80 per cent more likely to die. The reasoning that fat people are thrown further forward due to their extra tissue stops that seatbelt tightening immediately.
  • A man wearing a shirt displaying the words, "HELLO, my name is Inigo Montaya, you killed my father, prepare to die," was asked by aeroplane crew to change shirts. Apparently other flyers had felt intimated by the Princess Bride quote on Wynand Mullins' T-shirt. He had no spare shirt so had to remain in his supposedly offending apparel. It is not known whether Mullins has six fingers.
  • Warwick Davis, who has been in Star Wars, Harry Potter, Narnia and the Hitchhiker's movie, has released an app for iPhone. This free application called PocketWarwick allows you to "feed, dress, train and educate" the celebrity.
  • Cat lovers beware! New Zealand economist Gareth Morgan, of CatstoGo, is demanding the country's entire domestic cat population to be eradicated, after concerns of environmental damage and endangered local bird species. Morgan urges all cat owners to spay, neuter and even euthanize their pets in order to slow, and eventually stop the extermination process. Considering that almost half of New Zealand owns at least one cat, it's most likely going to be a pretty tough sell.
  • And Finally, Yanping Wang of the Beijing Planetarium shows us what soy sauce looks like, at 16x magnified
